I know what you’re thinking, “What do spider webs have to do with art?” This is a technique I was introduced to a while back. It uses spider webs (the kind you hang at Halloween) to create the intricate lines. Paint is applied by spraying. My “Spacin’ Out” series shows paintings done the way I was taught to do them. These paintings are my variations using hand-cut stencils.
There is no brush work on these paintings. They are created entirely by spraying. Each segment of bamboo, every leaf and stem is painstakingly cut by hand and applied to the surface of the paper after the original paint application has dried.
Then, to create depth, another layer is applied. All the stencils remain in place until the very end, so I don’t get to see what the painting really looks like until it’s done. The final step of these paintings is to cut and place the stencils that allow me to add the positive shapes, such as the leaves, stems and stalks that cross in front of the moon.
